Easter 2008 - Earlier than Most, But with the Same Great Value

Easter is unique this year. Easter is always the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Vernal Equinox (which is March 20). This dating of Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used to identify passover, which is why it moves around on our Roman calendar.

Here's the interesting info. This year is the earliest Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives! And only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this early (95 years old or above!). And none of us have ever, or will ever, see it a day earlier! Here's the facts:

  1. The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this early was 1913 (so if you're 95 or older, you are the only ones that were around for that!).
  2. The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on March 22 was 1818. So, no one alive today has or will ever see it any earlier than this year!

Watch Before the Election

Tony B sent this link over. You might think you want Government-run health care, but how many Government-run service programs can you say you're truly happy with? If you think dealing with an HMO is a pain now - consider how it will be when the HMO is run by Big Brother.

Superdelegate Dinners and Ethics

If I remember my Ethics 101 training, if I accept a gift from someone who wants to influence my decisions at work, that is unethical. If I offer someone else a gift in order to gain an advantage in how they do their job - that's unethical.

I keep picturing a defense attorney taking the jury out to a big fancy dinner in the middle of deliberations. Would that be okay?

Maybe others are doing it too, but it just doesn't sound right to me.

NCAA to Ban the Color Blue Next?

From the Grand Forks Herald "A January vote by NCAA members gives increased authority to the group that enacted the association’s 2005 Indian nickname ban to implement similar policies in the future."

Rumors of impending changes include the banishment of the color blue from all College uniforms, logos, and nicknames.

An unnamed, unreliable source has confirmed that, "now that we [the Executive Committee] have 'god' status, we have to solidify our reign by removing anything that remotely resembles our blue NCAA logo. Hence, anything with blue in it simply has to go. Those schools can pick some other color but blue is ours. We own it and we're not sharing. If anyone resists, we will simply ban them from receiving any of the post-season money that they... I mean, we generate. The Delaware Blue Hens will have to change their name - maybe they can just be the 'Hens.' Duke? Let's face it, Red Devils would make more sense anyway, wouldn't it? Our committee has even worked a deal where we'll pay Notre Dame $10M to move to their green jerseys full time. I mean, Notre Dame, we have to treat them differently, you know?"

As part of their ever increasing efforts to be politically correct, the committee is also undertaking a study as to the feasibility of 'points sharing.' It seems that players on 'non-winning' teams may suffer from damage to their self-esteem. To avoid upsetting disadvantaged players, the NCAA is proposing that both teams will get identical scores regardless of which team actually scores. "After all," our source confirmed, "everyone is trying. It's only right that they get their fair share of the points." Under this plan, all tournaments will be played in a round robin format and all players and teams not wearing blue will be declared "Co-National Champions." The Bowl Division of NCAA football will continue to play bowls but now every team will get to go to a bowl game since all will have identical, non-offensive records.

Ben Stein's Movie: Expelled

Ben Stein has put together a documentary on the science of Intelligent Design and the price that scientists pay for exploring it. Somehow, if a scientist advocates that our universe and those of us in it were created by anything other than mere chance, they are ostracized and abused. The smug self-righteousness of those who purport to be open-minded is disturbing.

When did science and religion split? Was Darwin the beginning of it or was it already divided? I haven't researched it but it sounds like a worthy project. I'm sure someone has. Perhaps we can come up with a link that points to it.

Check out the trailer for Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, it looks intriguing.

Thanks, Tony.

In the midst of the afternoon heat yesterday, Madison noticed this squirrel sunbathing on the deck out back. I guess the warm wood felt good as it is still getting down around 30 degrees at night.

FISA Falls as House Vacations

If you don't think Congress dropping the ball on FISA is a big deal, you aren't paying attention.

From the New York Post:
"February 18, 2008 — The Protect America Act - a modernization of the three-decade old Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which authorizes intercepts of foreign communications - has expired.

"Before departing on a 10-day recess, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her fellow Democrats Thursday refused to vote on a reauthorization of the law - even though it passed by a huge bipartisan majority in the Senate earlier in the week.

"However, House Democrats did find time to issue contempt-of-Congress citations to White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former counsel Harriet Miers. The citations relate to the overblown fired-federal-prosecutors “scandal” of a year ago.

"Thus, Pelosi and Co. made their priorities abundantly clear to the country:

  • Play politics.
  • Go on vacation.
  • To hell with national security."

Judge Orders Homeschoolers into Government Indoctrination...er... Education

It appears that in California (look for other states to follow suit) your kids are not your kids - they belong to the state. I feel like that little lady from the Wendy's commercials except that instead of saying, "Where's the beef?" We should all be saying, "Where's the Freedom?"

Hopefully efforts like RescueYourChild.org and CaliforniaExodus.org will help to bring some sanity back to the state of California.
